Groups and Partners

Across Northumberland, several groups and organisations offer opportunities, training, and events for local people with an interest in wild plants. The list below is not exhaustive but shares those which are the most active locally.

Recording Groups

Northumberland Botany Group

An informal new group launched in 2022 with a focus on recording and enjoying wild plants across Northumberland, and supporting beginner and intermediate botanists. This group is open to all and arranges regular walks and surveys across the area. For more information, see here.

Alnwick Wildlife Group

One of the most active local groups in the area, the Alnwick Wildlife Group encourages the study and appreciation of all strands of natural history. Many members are active botanists and regularly carry out recording across the Alnwick area. For more information, see here.

Local Groups & Organisations

Natural History Society of Northumbria

Operating across the North East, NHSN’s Botany Special Interest Group organises trips and talks for local people interested in wildflowers. They also offer a range of botanical education courses for botanists of all experience levels. Find out more here.

Northumberland Wildlife Trust

Northumberland Wildlife Trust manages many nature reserves of high botanical interest and from time to time, runs a range of informative events, bioblitzes, and recording sessions with a focus on wild plants. For more information, see here.

Durham Wildlife Trust

Only just out of the area, Durham Wildlife Trust sports an incredibly active botany group that carries out vital recording across VC66. Regularly arranging events, trips, and short courses, they offer a range of exciting opportunities and welcome all to get involved. Find out more here.

ERIC North East

The North East’s Environmental Records Information Centre, ERIC works with local wildlife recording groups to collate environmental data to be used in nature conservation. They run an active engagement programme which often includes events focused on wildflowers. Find out more here.
